When is a recession not a recession? - when the BBC calls it a 'downturn'. Mervyn King was convinced we were in recession back in October, but what would he know? The BBC graphics and newspeak continue to call it a 'downturn'.

We're Watching You, Benefit Fraud Campaign. Just as the country is collapsing into a recession, sorry, 'downturn', and unemployment is on the way to over two million, the government is busy stirring up an Orwellian witchhunt against benefit cheats. And wasting money in the process (£9 million, according to The Times). Nice one.

The Spawn of the Manse, however, is too far gone in delusion and vanity to have the decency to acknowledge he's out of his depth.

Makes you wish we were more Australian in our choice of language, since our economy is even more buggered than theirs.

Booze and Fags

The government plans ways to combat booze-mad Brits. The same government that introduced 24 hour licensing. MPs will still be able to get tanked up in their own subsidised bars in the House of Commons, of course.

The Libertarian Party arranged for every MP to receive a copy of Orwell's 1984. The reactions of two Labour clones (Tom Harris and Kerry McCarthy) are reported in the blogosphere. Like them, Paul Flynn also seems confused. Perhaps it would have been a good idea to enclose an explanatory letter with each copy.

God, am I sick to death of the this endlessly regurgitated crap from the media!

What purposes does it fulfil, apart from allowing media wankers to pleasures themelves in public?

1) distraction from the reality of recession and the Mandelson-Osborne-Deripaska scandal

2) fuel for the incoming Tory government to start dismantling the BBC.

And, as a postscript to reveal the utter intellectual vacuousness of our elected representatives, is a post from Devil's Kitchen regarding MP Tom Harris's reaction to receiving a copy of Orwell's 1984.

Mr Harris appears to have been asleep while the government was passing various bits of legislation which increase the intensity and scope of the surveillance we are to be put under (and which we were not told about).
